Hand Vein Removal FAQ’s

WHY REMOVE VEINS FROM THE HAND?

Quite simply, to look better and younger in a hurry. Many women are self-conscious about the way their hands look. Some have unusually large bulging veins that are very masculine – others object to “the old lady look” of hand veins. Plastic surgeons know that while facial surgery helps you look younger, hands often reveal your true age. Hand vein injection therapy, as done in our offices, offers a fast, simple, and virtually painless way to have younger looking hands. The results are dramatic and long lasting. Although people heal at different rates, we have had the pleasant experience of seeing our hand vein patients appear on national television or the Broadway stage the day after treatment.

DON’T I NEED THESE VEINS?

The anatomy of the arm and hand is very much like that of the leg and foot. There are many veins which are able to return blood to the heart. Superficial veins (the surface veins we can see under the skin) are not essential, since there is a rich network of deep veins that is more than adequate to drain the hand. When treating hand and arm veins, we are always careful to preserve at least one arm vein for future administration of intravenous mediations.

HOW IS IT DONE?

Injecting hand veins is similar to injection therapy for leg veins. Both are done in our office and no anesthetic is needed. All treatment is administered personally by Dr. Lee Schulman M.D. or Dr. Martin Schulman M.D. Only FDA approved medications with a long record of safety are used and all equipment is single use and disposable. A small cotton compression bandage is worn for two hours after treatment. The treatment is virtually painless. You may drive home immediately.

I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HAND VEIN INJECTION THERAPY. IS IT SAFE?

At the Schulman Vein and Laser Centers we have been performing hand vein injection therapy for more than 30 years. Many thousands of hands have been treated (including many members of our family and nursing staff) without a significant complication. Our physicians, Dr. Lee Schulman M.D. and Martin Schulman M.D., are recognized as world leaders in hand vein therapy. As a result of our teaching, others have incorporated this treatment in their practices.

WHAT ARE THE DOWNSIDES OR RISKS?

In a nutshell, there is no significant risk associated with hand vein therapy. The suntan-like darkening occasionally seen after leg vein treatment is never seen in the hands. Mild hand swelling may be present for a few days and there may also be some tenderness in treated areas, but these resolve quickly.

WHAT IS THE COST OF HAND VEIN THERAPY?

For complete treatment of the veins of both hands, including all follow-up visits…FOREVER. Our fee is $2,500. While treatment of symptomatic leg veins may be covered by insurance, hand vein therapy is strictly cosmetic and not reimbursable.

We have treated the hands of patients from as far away as Alaska and Europe. Out of town patients should allow for at least two office visits on consecutive days (the second visit is to treat any residual veins). Click on our Out Of Town Patients page to learn more.
